Behavior Acquisition (area C) — the largest single block of the RBT exam

Behavior Acquisition — area C of the RBT Test Content Outline — is 19 of the 75 scored items on the exam, a quarter of everything you can score and the largest single block in the outline.
That figure is BACB’s own. The third edition of the outline publishes how many scored items come from each of the six content areas, and area C gets 19 of them across eleven tasks, C.1 to C.11. The next area down is Behavior Reduction at 14. Most credentialing boards publish nothing like this, and it turns the first question every candidate asks — what do I study first — into arithmetic.
Area C is also where the vocabulary lives. Prompting, fading, chaining, stimulus control, generalization: those terms show up inside items belonging to other areas, so time spent here is not confined to 19 marks. This page works through the procedures the outline names for area C and, for each one, the distinction the exam keeps asking you to make.
One framing to hold on to for the whole page. You are preparing to recognize and describe these procedures under exam conditions. In a real session you implement them only as written in your client’s plan and under your supervisor’s direction, which is a different skill with a different set of safeguards.

Why area C gets your first and best sessions
Area C carries more marks than areas B and E put together, and it is the one place on this exam where extra hours are obviously worth it.
Every item on the exam is weighted the same, so a mark here is worth exactly what a mark in Behavior Assessment is worth (the published wording, and what it does not mean). There are simply nineteen of them to win instead of eight, which is the entire argument for reading this page before anything else.

C.1 and C.2
Reinforcement, and the dimensions items are built on
Reinforcement is task C.1, and it sits underneath every other procedure in the area — chaining, shaping, discrimination training and token economies are all arrangements of it.
The outline asks you to deliver reinforcement along its dimensions, which is the part candidates skip. A reinforcer is not a thing you hand over; it is a consequence that made the behavior more likely in the future, and how well it works depends on how quickly it arrives, whether it actually depends on the response, how much of it there is, how varied it is and on what schedule it comes. Items are written on those dimensions: an item describing a reinforcer delivered a few minutes after the response is testing immediacy, and an item describing a learner who receives the item whether or not they respond is testing contingency.

Positive and negative describe addition or removal, never good or bad. Reinforcement and punishment describe the effect on future behavior. The bottom row belongs to area D; it is here because items are built on the contrast.
Task C.2 is conditioned reinforcers: stimuli that did nothing for the learner until they were paired with something that did. Praise, a check mark and a token are the standard examples, and a token is the case the outline gives its own task. A conditioned reinforcer keeps working only for as long as the pairing behind it holds up — which is the whole reason token systems have a section further down this page.
Schedules belong here too. Continuous reinforcement, where every correct response earns something, is a teaching schedule: it builds a new response quickly and it does not survive contact with the ordinary world. Intermittent schedules — fixed and variable, ratio and interval — produce responding that keeps going when reinforcement does not arrive every time. Thinning from one to the other is not a detail at the end of the program; it is how a newly acquired skill becomes a maintained one.
C.3 and C.4
Discrete-trial and naturalistic teaching
C.3 and C.4 are two teaching formats, not a good one and a bad one — and the item almost never asks which is better.
It describes a scene and asks which format that is, or what the format requires you to do next. So learn the shape of each. A discrete trial is a small, repeatable unit: a clear instruction, a chance to respond, a consequence, a brief gap, repeat. Naturalistic teaching — incidental teaching and natural environment training in the outline’s vocabulary — runs the same behavioral contingency inside whatever the learner is already doing, using the motivation that is already there.

Two more things share this part of the outline. Modeling and imitation training run through both formats — a demonstration is a prompt, and its removal is a fading problem like any other. And the outline’s wording matters more than the label on the program: an item that mentions a table, a stack of cards and a fixed set of trials has told you the format without naming it, and an item that mentions the learner reaching for something on a shelf has told you the other one.
C.5
Task analysis and chaining
A task analysis comes first: the multi-step skill broken into steps small enough that each one can be taught, prompted and scored on its own.
Everything in C.5 depends on that list existing and being followed in order. An item that describes steps being skipped, merged or reordered is usually testing whether you know that the task analysis is the plan, not a suggestion. Once the list exists, three procedures teach it.

Which one a plan uses is a clinical decision made by the supervisor who wrote it. For the exam you need to tell them apart from a description.
Chaining links responses the learner can already make, or can be prompted to make, into a sequence. That is worth stating plainly because of what comes next.
C.10
Shaping is not chaining
Shaping changes the form of a single response; chaining links separate responses into a sequence. Items are written on exactly that difference.
Shaping is task C.10: reinforcing successive approximations to a target behavior, and moving the criterion as the learner meets it. The behavior you want does not yet exist in the learner’s repertoire, so you reinforce something close to it, then something closer, until the target appears. Nothing is being chained — there is one response throughout, and its shape, duration, force or accuracy is what changes.
The differential part is what makes shaping shaping: once the criterion has moved, the approximation that used to earn reinforcement no longer does. A program that keeps reinforcing the old approximation alongside the new one has stalled, and a program that raises the criterion faster than the learner can follow loses the response altogether.
C.6
Discrimination training and stimulus control
Discrimination training teaches the learner to respond in the presence of one stimulus and not in the presence of another — that is task C.6, and it is the concept the whole prompting section below serves.
The vocabulary is worth getting exact. A discriminative stimulus signals that a response will be reinforced; the stimulus in whose presence it will not be is the S-delta. Teaching runs both: reinforcement follows the response in the first condition and is withheld in the second, and after enough contrast the stimulus itself controls the response. That is what stimulus control means, and it is the state the program is trying to reach.
Prompt fading is not tidying up at the end of teaching. It is the transfer of stimulus control from your prompt to the thing that will be there when you are not.
Hold that sentence, because it explains why so many area C items are about removing help rather than giving it. A learner who answers correctly every time you point at the right card has a discrimination — it is just under the control of your finger.
C.7 · the anchor of the area
Prompting and fading, in two tables
C.7 is the densest task in area C: two families of prompt, and a set of named procedures for getting rid of them.
Take the two tables as a pair. The first answers what kind of help was given, the second answers how the help is being removed, and an item will usually give you one and ask for the other.

The outline names both families in C.7. An item that changes the array is describing a stimulus prompt even when it never uses the phrase.

C.7’s own examples are errorless, least-to-most, stimulus fading and time delay. Most-to-least, graduated guidance and simultaneous prompting are standard ABA vocabulary that items also use; they are not in the outline’s wording.
Two more things the items reward. Fading is a written step in the program rather than a judgment made mid-session — the plan names the levels and the point at which they change. And time delay has a constant form and a progressive one: the pause between instruction and prompt either stays the same throughout or grows as the learner starts to beat it. That difference is the whole item whenever time delay appears.
Prompt dependence is the failure state the whole task is arranged around. A learner who waits for the gestural prompt before touching anything is responding to you rather than to the material, and the answer to an item describing that is almost always about transferring control, not about adding more help.
C.8 and C.9
Generalization and maintenance
C.8 and C.9 are separate tasks because a skill that only works in the teaching room, with the teaching materials and the person who taught it, has not finished being taught.
C.9 is unusual in this area: almost every other task begins with implement, and this one asks you to tell a maintenance procedure from an acquisition procedure. Which means the exam will hand you a description and ask which phase it belongs to, so the boundary needs to be crisp.

Maintenance runs on the other lever: schedule. A skill reinforced every single time in teaching is thinned toward the intermittent, more ordinary schedule it will meet outside, and it is checked again later rather than assumed. An item that describes a mastered skill quietly disappearing a month after the program moved on is a maintenance item, not an acquisition failure.
C.11
Token economies
A token economy is a conditioned reinforcement system with a delay built into it: the learner earns tokens for a specified response and exchanges them later for something they actually want.
Task C.11 gives it its own line, and items test the machinery rather than the idea. Three parts have to be defined before the system does anything: what earns a token, what the tokens can be exchanged for, and when the exchange happens. The backup reinforcers are where the power comes from — a token is a laminated square until it reliably buys something.
Response cost — losing tokens already earned — works on the reduction side rather than the acquisition side, and a plan that includes it is a plan your supervisor wrote that way. It is standard ABA vocabulary rather than the outline’s: task D.5 names time-out as its example. The behavior reduction guide covers that half.
Differential reinforcement
Where area C meets area D
Differential reinforcement appears in both halves of the exam, and area C is the half where you are building something.
Reinforcing one response and withholding reinforcement from another is the same operation whether the goal is a new skill or a smaller problem. The acquisition side of it is what you have been reading: reinforce the target approximation and not the earlier one, reinforce the response in the presence of the discriminative stimulus and not the S-delta, reinforce the independent response and not the prompted one. When a plan teaches a replacement behavior that gets the learner the same outcome the problem behavior used to get, the teaching half of that plan is area C work — the alternative response has to be taught, prompted, faded and generalized like any other skill.

Run the plan as it is written
Items in this area reward the answer that follows the written skill acquisition plan — the target, the prompt level, the schedule, the order of steps. A scenario where a technician improvises a better idea mid-session is a scenario with a wrong answer in it.
Raise the problem instead of solving it yourself
When a plan is not working, when a step looks unsafe, when the materials are missing or when the learner has changed, the correct exam answer routes it to the supervisor who wrote the plan and keeps data in the meantime. Designing or modifying the program is not an RBT task in this outline.
Record what happened, not what you concluded
Procedural fidelity and data both belong to the record. What you implemented, at what prompt level, and what the learner did — that is area C touching the documentation area, and the items sound the same in both.

How much of the RBT exam is behavior acquisition?
Nineteen of the 75 scored items, which BACB rounds to 25% in the Test Content Outline. Eleven of the outline’s 43 tasks sit in the area. Every item on the exam is weighted the same, so area C is not worth more per question — there are simply more questions.
What is the difference between discrete-trial and naturalistic teaching?
Who starts the trial and where the reinforcement comes from. A discrete trial is instructor-led and repeatable, with an arranged consequence; naturalistic teaching follows the learner’s own motivation inside an ordinary activity and uses the natural outcome of the response. Items describe a scene and expect you to name the format.
Do I have to memorize a prompt hierarchy in a fixed order?
Memorize the direction and the purpose rather than a ladder. You need to tell response prompts from stimulus prompts, know that most-to-least starts with the most help and least-to-most starts with none, and know what each fading procedure is protecting against. Which levels a particular program uses is written in that program.
Is shaping the same as chaining?
No, and the pair is one of the most reliable sources of lost marks in this area. Shaping reinforces successive approximations of one response until its form matches the target. Chaining links responses the learner can already make into a sequence built from a task analysis.
Where do DRO and DRA belong — here or in behavior reduction?
The named differential-reinforcement schedules are area D content and they are covered in the behavior reduction guide. What belongs here is the teaching half: a replacement behavior still has to be taught, prompted, faded and generalized, and that is area C work.
